Monuments are static.

What if they were more reflective of the person or event that they were meant to commemorate?

What if they too were ever-changing, inhabited by moments of sorrow and joy and deeply impacted by the people that they crossed paths with?

Monuments in Play

(2024 - ongoing)

A portable found object assemblage by night and a puppet stage by day, Monuments in Play reimagines the monument as a living sculpture. As a platform for grief and joy - two glove puppets sewn from the same inverted cloth - Monuments in Play becomes an evolving testament to the many selves that define a life and death.

The public is invited to bring the monument to life by writing a script and performing it with Kat Geng-Caraballo’s fabric puppets, Sunny Self and Sorrowful Self. Each participant decides the person or place for whom the monument is intended. Using found text - sourced from a newspaper or book - pairs of people create a six-line script to be performed live. participants have the option to write a script for others to perform or to perform their own play.

This first iteration of Monument in Play took place in Upstate New York at the exhibition Lawn Monuments by Good Naked Gallery.
